Waterproof Laminate
Waterproof Laminate
Waterproof laminate's moisture-resistant core is designed to keep water from soaking into the material, staining it, or causing it to swell and buckle. However, it isn't waterproof in the same way as sheet vinyl, natural stone, or ceramic tile. Yet, it is an inexpensive alternative and does offer good water-resistance.
Technically, most waterproof laminate is more water-resistant than fully waterproof. This is because while the individual planks may be waterproof, the flooring material around and underneath, are not. As a result, if significant water damage occurs, the sub-flooring still has to be removed and replaced.
Some manufacturers use the term "water-resistant" instead of "waterproof" in their product brochures. The best waterproof laminate guarantees the flooring won't absorb water for a reasonable amount of time – usually about 24 hours, depending on the laminate.
